ABOUT
German-born Anke Rauthmann is a versatile stage director, often linking genres and exploring multiple theatrical forms.
She studied classical ballet and figure skating from an early age and earned her M.A. in Drama, Sociology and Literature at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. As assistant director she received major artistic impulses from Richard Jones and David Alden at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, the Bregenz Festival in Austria as well as various operas houses in France and the Komische Oper Berlin.
She chose Berlin as her creative home and took the artistic leadership of the multicultural Berlin International Opera. Her work includes Mozart´s LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and DON GIOVANNI, Rossini´s LA GAZZA LADRA and chamber operas like THE MEDIUM and LA VOIX HUMAINE. She has a particular interest in new opera and has staged several world premieres: KASPAR HAUSER for Tete à Tete and Grimeborn Festival London, the German premiere of the American Christmas opera THE GIFT OF THE MAGI and Pacini´s DON GIOVANNI O IL CONVITATO DI PIETRA for the Rossini Festival in Wildbad, for which she received international critical acclaim.
With characteristic openness, she devised Shakespeare´s MIDSUMMER NIGHT´S DREAM with a cast of disabled actors and A PILGRIM´S PASSAGE as an open air musical pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago involving 120 performers.
For Mecklenburg State Opera Schwerin she directed THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK and the 19th century operettas DER MUSIKFEIND/ DIE OPERNPROBE (Genée/ Lortzing) as well as the two 20th contemporary operas LE PAUVRE MATELOT/ DEATH KNOCKS (Milhaud/ Jost) - which was praised as “the season´s highlight“ by NDR-Radio in 2013.
Most recently she interpreted two theatrical classics - PINOCCHIO at Landestheater Eisleben and Molière´s MISANTHROPE in Potsdam - both productions are now on tour throughout Germany.
Anke Rauthmann regularly teaches at the Royal College of Music, London and Al-Quds College of Music, Jerusalem. As an actress she has performed in Tel Aviv, Berlin, Barcelona, Karlsruhe and Dresden, and won first prize 2010 at the Acco Theatre Festival in Israel.
She speaks German, English and Hebrew as well as French and Italian and is currently living in Hamburg.

Ihre künstlerische Heimat ist der Tanz, als Jugendliche war sie Eiskunstlauf- Leistungssportlerin. Ihre akademische Ausbildung erwarb sie an der Universität Erlangen in Theaterwissenschaft, Soziologie und Literatur. Sie lebte sechs Jahre in Tel Aviv und wurde von David Alden und Richard Jones geprägt, mit denen sie an der Israelischen Oper Tel Aviv, Bregenzer Festspiele, an Opernhäusern in Frankreich und der Komische Oper Berlin arbeitete.
Sie machte Berlin zu ihrer kreativen Heimat und wurde künstlerische Leiterin der multikulturellen Berlin International Opera. Eine Geschichtenerzählerin, die keine Berührungsängste mit dem Unbekannten hat: Mozarts NOZZE DE FIGARO in einer Berliner Villa, die international vielbeachtete Uraufführung DON GIOVANNI O IL CONVITATO DI PIETRA von Pacini, DAS TAGEBUCH DER ANNE FRANK, die amerikanische Weihnachtsoper THE GIFT OF THE MAGI sozialkritisch, die Stationenoper DER WEG DES PILGERS mit 120 Mitwirkenden am Jakobsweg, Shakespeares SOMMERNACHTSTRAUM am integrativen Theater Thikwa Berlin - das sind einige Projekte dieser ungewöhnlichen Regisseurin.
Ihr Musikbezug ist intuitiv, körperlich und energiegeladen. Sie liebt die emotionale Kraft der Bühne, auch das Hintergründig- Surreale und den Witz, und lockt ihre Schauspieler und Sänger mit spielerischer Fantasie aus der Reserve.
Aktuell ist ihr Doppelopernabend DER MUSIKFEIND/DIE OPERNPROBE im Großen Haus des Mecklenburgisches Staatstheaters Schwerin zu sehen. Ihre Inszenierung der Kammeropern DER ARME MATROSE /DEATH KNOCKS am selben Haus wurde von der NDR-Kritik 2013 als "Höhepunkt der Spielzeit" bezeichnet. Mit PINOCCIO am Landestheater Eisleben und DER MENSCHENFEIND am Poetenpack Potsdam gehen diese Saison zwei ihrer Schauspiel-Inszenierungen auf Deutschland-Tournee.
Anke Rauthmann scheut auch selbst das Rampenlicht nicht. So gewann sie als Schauspielerin 2010 mit dem deutsch-israelischen Stück SCHWEIGEMINUTE den 1. Preis beim israelischen Akko Theaterfestival und trat zuletzt in Barcelona auf. Sie lehrt am Royal Collage of Music in London und dem Al-Quds College of Music in Jerusalem.
Anke Rauthmann spricht Deutsch, Hebräisch, Englisch sowie Französisch und Italienisch und lebt heute in Hamburg.
